Application of Intelligent Control Methods to the Management of Modular Hybrid Energy Systems

A recent trend in the design of hybrid energy systems is the development of standardised systems, which can support a variety of applications. The performance of parallel hybrid energy systems can be improved through the application of advanced control methods implemented by a centralised system controller. Optimum resource allocation based on load demand and renewable resource forecast, promises to significantly reduce the total operating cost of the system. This can be achieved through the development of an adaptive control unit, which decides on the commitment of renewable and nonrenewable resources to improve overall system efficiency. The following paper discusses the conceptual basis for the development of an intelligent hybrid energy system controller and presents initial research results.
